What is Gum (Periodontal) Disease?

Taking care of our gums is important. Most people don’t know how common Periodontal Disease, also known as Gum Disease, is.

This disease occurs when bacteria in plaque builds up and irritates the gum tissue, leading to inflammation and infection. The gums begin to pull away from the bone and teeth lose support. The earliest stage of Periodontal Disease is called Gingivitis and may bleed easily. At this stage, the disease is still reversable and can usually be treated by daily brushing, flossing, and regular professional dental cleanings.

The stages of Periodontal Disease are: Healthy Gums – Gingivitis – Periodontitis – Advanced Periodontitis

When checking for Periodontal Disease, your dentist will use an instrument called a “periodontal probe” to gently measure the depth of the pockets around each of your teeth. Dental x-rays can also check for bone supporting your teeth and locate any signs of damage from gum disease.
