How Does Stress Affect My Oral Health?
Meeting the needs of our family, work, and social lives on a daily basis can be stressful. In addition to affecting your mental health, stress can also affect your teeth. Our bodies may respond to stress in many different ways, but there are also some tactics to calm our bodies and mind.
A few ways stress affects our teeth are gum disease, teeth grinding and clenching, temporomandibular disorders, canker sores, dry mouth, or infection. Symptoms also include headaches, a sore jaw, frequent toothaches, and damage to the teeth.
If you are feeling stressed, try these tips:
- Practice meditating, deep breathing, or yoga, and visualize a relaxing area such as a vacation on the beach.
- Take your dog out on a walk, go on a jog, or ride your bike to clear your mind.
- Immerse yourself in a creative outlet such as painting, gardening, or baking.
We want our patients to feel relaxed while maintaining a healthy smile. Learning to cool down takes practice. Be patient with yourself, and you will see the benefits.
