What is gum recession?

faq friday what is gum recession

Most people don't know why they are experiencing gum recession because this is an issue that gradually occurs. Gum recession is the process in which the margin of the gum tissue that surrounds the teeth wear away, pulls back, and exposes more than the tooth or the tooth's root. When the gum recession occurs, "pockets" or gaps form between the teeth and gum line, making it easy for bacteria to build up.

A few causes of gum recession are:

  1. Periodontal "gum disease"
  2. Genetics
  3. Aggressive tooth brushing
  4. Insufficient dental care
  5. Hormonal changes
  6. Tobacco products
  7. Grinding and clenching teeth

If patients begin treatment at an early stage, they can stop or reverse this process. Whereas if this health concern is severe, it can cause symptoms such as tooth sensitivity, pain, or infection. There are still various treatments available such as deep cleaning, medicating infections, and tissue grafts when the conditions are at this stage. Most importantly, if this issue is left untreated, the supporting tissue and bone structures of the teeth can be severely damaged, and may ultimately result in tooth loss. They can also lead to foul breath and bleeding gums.
